'Renfield' Review
Type “oh, negative”
A film about Dracula's assistant rethinking their line of employment is a fun concept at modernizing a familiar myth - hopefully one day such a film gets made. Which isn't to totally decry Renfield of possessing any merits; in fact, the precise problem is the film not leaning into its merits enough. Cage's Prince of Darkness and Hoult's harried follower are delightful screen presences, and their relationship manages to both amuse and depict toxic codependence with gravity. Unfortunately, slagged around that is a pointless and unfunny pseudo police-mafia soap exchanging absurdity for action schlock, an overabundance of flimsy stakes which do little more than drain what remains in the heart.
